India's Nuclear Power Expansion Drives Mechanical Seal Demand; Sealmatic Positions Itself in Nuclear-Grade Supply Chain
August 29, 2026 - Sealmatic India Ltd. is leveraging its in-house mechanical seal technology and nuclear application quality certifications to expand into India's nuclear energy equipment supporting market. As India advances its nuclear power capacity expansion, demand for highly reliable mechanical seals in reactors and related pumping systems is expected to grow steadily.

Although mechanical seals are not among major primary equipment such as reactors, pumps, or turbines, they play a critical role in the safe, reliable, and continuous operation of nuclear power plants. These products are primarily used in systems including main coolant, reactor coolant, auxiliary feedwater, and emergency core cooling pumps, where high demands are placed on seal reliability, operational integrity, and long-term stability.
Compared with ordinary industrial mechanical seals, nuclear-grade mechanical seals typically require specialized engineering design, rigorous testing, qualification, and approval processes before entering the supply chain. Sealmatic has obtained ISO 19443 certification for its nuclear application quality management system. This standard targets the nuclear energy supply chain and sets higher requirements for quality management and safety-related criteria.
India's current nuclear power installed capacity stands at approximately 8.8 GW, with plans to increase it to around 22 GW by 2032 and a long-term target of reaching 100 GW of nuclear power capacity over the next 20 years. As related projects advance, demand for nuclear-specific mechanical seals and other critical components is expected to expand.
Sealmatic stated that it has begun supplying domestically manufactured mechanical seals for critical nuclear applications. However, nuclear power projects generally feature long testing, qualification, commissioning, and execution cycles, meaning that converting R&D and supply opportunities into revenue will take time.
Under the guidance of India's Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), Sealmatic is developing in-house mechanical seal products tailored to the needs of India's nuclear industry. The company said that after securing a significant development order, it is also investing in R&D for other seal types applicable to future nuclear power plants.
Beyond the domestic Indian market, Sealmatic is also in discussions with European equipment manufacturers to bring its nuclear-grade seal technology to the international market. Thirumalai Chandran, the company's Assistant Vice President of Nuclear Sales, stated that India's nuclear power expansion offers long-term opportunities for specialized engineering and component manufacturers. Although mechanical seals are small in size, their reliability is essential to the safe and continuous operation of critical pumping systems.
Sealmatic also emphasized that nuclear energy is only part of its industrial business. The company's products are also applied in industries including oil and gas, refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, thermal power, marine, pulp and paper, aerospace, and food and beverage, while it is also monitoring markets such as solar energy, industrial expansion, water infrastructure, and data center cooling. The company stated that with its nuclear-grade certification, in-house technology development, and multi-industry presence, it will continue to expand its nuclear and high-end industrial sealing business both domestically and internationally.
