AI-Enhanced MRI System Deployed at Utah Medical Center for Cardiac and Cancer Imaging

Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, has begun using a new magnetic resonance (MR) system for imaging cardiac and cancer patients. The facility stated that the GE HealthCare SIGNA Sprint Elite MR system was placed into service earlier this year, making it the first of its kind in Utah and the second in the United States.

According to the hospital, the system integrates artificial intelligence software designed to reduce image noise and enhance scan clarity. The facility believes that clearer images will help clinicians assess cardiac tissue and cancer-related conditions, while also potentially reducing the time patients spend undergoing MR exams.

Cardiac imaging is one of the system's key application areas. Because the heart is in constant motion and blood is continuously flowing, obtaining clear images is typically challenging. Brent Wilson, a cardiologist at Intermountain Health, stated that clearly imaging a beating heart and flowing blood without extending MR exam times has long been difficult; clearer images can support physicians in using new methods to map damaged areas of heart tissue, thereby improving treatment.

The facility also anticipates that faster scan speeds will increase MR imaging capacity and reduce patient wait times. The system can reduce the need for patients to hold their breath for extended periods during certain cardiac scans, which may be more suitable for heart disease patients.

Amy Warnick, MRI coordinator at Intermountain Medical Center, stated that faster scan speeds mean shorter wait times, allowing patients to receive diagnoses and needed treatment more promptly. The system replaces previous equipment that did not offer comparable AI image enhancement capabilities.
