Recently, Bluecore Energy, a nuclear energy startup headquartered in California, USA, completed a $50 million seed round of financing to advance its compact water-cooled nuclear reactor project designed specifically for marine environments. The company has procured Low-Enriched Uranium Hexafluoride from nuclear fuel trader WMC Group. The batch of raw material is currently stored at a facility in California and will subsequently be converted into Uranium Dioxide and fabricated into fuel pellets for future hardware and system testing.

It is understood that Bluecore Energy is conducting testing of a fuel-free reactor prototype at the Port of Long Beach, California. The company obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in June 2026, becoming the first U.S. floating nuclear power plant concept design to receive such certification. Currently, the company is developing floating nuclear energy systems for ports, critical infrastructure, and future offshore and underwater application scenarios.

In terms of regulatory and safety approval, Bluecore Energy formally entered pre-application consultations with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in August of this year to further refine its concept design and maritime safety certification process. Kofi Asante, the company's founder and CEO, stated that the project is advancing key aspects simultaneously, including fuel supply, engineering testing, safety regulation, and maritime certification.

It is reported that establishing a stable and reliable nuclear fuel supply chain is the core cornerstone for floating reactors to achieve commercial deployment. Industry experts say that as maritime certification and pre-regulatory review continue to deepen, the project is expected to open up a brand-new technological pathway for global marine nuclear energy applications and offshore zero-emission energy supply, while ensuring strict safety standards.
