U.S. Nuclear Power Construction Included as Candidate in South Korea's U.S. Investment Consultations
On September 10, 2026, consultations between South Korea and the United States over a $350 billion U.S. investment plan entered a late stage. In addition to the Encinar gas combined-cycle power project in Texas being regarded as the first investment candidate, the U.S. side is said to have also proposed using a considerable portion of the $200 billion in strategic investment for nuclear power plant construction. According to related information, the U.S. nuclear power construction plan includes up to eight large nuclear reactors, and South Korea's APR1400 reactor design has also been included in discussions for some projects. South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said regarding the nuclear power projects that relevant parties are in consultations, but specific details have not yet been determined. Texas's rapidly growing electricity demand is an important background for the South Korea-U.S. discussions on...

South Korea and Westinghouse Electric Plan to Advance Cooperation on 8 Nuclear Power Plants in the U.S.
According to a September 9 report by South Korean media, South Korea and the United States are coordinating an investment cooperation plan to build up to 8 large-scale nuclear power plants in the U.S., with a total project scale of approximately $120 billion, equivalent to about 161 trillion Korean won. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and U.S.-based Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) are expected to collaborate on the project. The report said the preliminary plans under discussion include: at least 2 of the 8 nuclear power plants using the Korean-designed APR1400 reactor, with the remaining units likely adopting Westinghouse AP1000 technology. Specific site selection, construction entities, operational arrangements, final reactor types...

South Korea's Woojin Entech Patents Diagnostic Device for APR1400 Control Rod Position Transmitter
South Korea's Woojin Entech announced on August 27 that it has completed the development of a precision diagnostic device for the Control Rod Position Transmitter (RSPT) applicable to APR1400 units and has completed the relevant patent registration. The Control Rod Position Transmitter is used to measure the position of control rods within the reactor and transmit related signals to the control system, making it a critical component for reactor control and monitoring. The patented diagnostic device is primarily designed to accurately assess the status of the control rod control system and to pre-check multiple types of fault conditions before unit operation. According to the company, existing RSPT precision diagnostic systems require the installation of multiple cables during testing, making preparation work relatively complex...

South Korea Raises 2040 Electricity Demand Forecast, Increment Equivalent to 19 Large Nuclear Power Units
A forum on the formulation of South Korea's 12th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand was held in Seoul on August 20. The new round of electricity demand forecasts submitted at the meeting showed that by 2040, South Korea's annual maximum electricity demand is expected to reach 158.4 GW to 165.0 GW, an upward revision of 26.6 GW to 26.8 GW compared to the forecast proposed in April this year. Based on the 1.4 GW single-unit capacity of the AP1400 large nuclear power unit under construction in South Korea, the increment in electricity demand from this upward revision is equivalent to the electricity provided by approximately 19 large nuclear power units operating at full power. The previous April forecast for the 2040 annual maximum electricity demand was 131.8 GW to 138.2 GW. The new forecast reflects semiconductor industry clusters...
