UK Rolls-Royce SMR Signs Memorandum of Understanding with ABB on Small Modular Reactors
On September 8, 2026, ABB and Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactors (Rolls-Royce SMR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore collaboration on small modular reactor projects. Under the MoU, ABB will study how its automation, electrification, instrumentation, and communications solutions can be applied to the scaled deployment of related projects. Rolls-Royce SMR is developing standardized, factory-prefabricated small modular reactor technology aimed at reducing nuclear project risks, improving delivery certainty, and providing low-carbon electricity in global markets. The company plans to develop a fleet of units, each with an electrical output of 470 megawatts, capable of meeting the electricity needs of one million UK households...

Global nuclear power generation hits record high in 2025
According to the World Nuclear Outlook Report released by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), global electricity generation from nuclear reactors reached 2,702 TWh in 2025, up from 2,667 TWh in 2024, setting a new historical record. The report estimates that if all countries' stated nuclear energy targets are fully achieved, global nuclear installed capacity could more than triple current levels by 2050. The report assesses the progress made by 38 countries toward the goal of tripling global nuclear capacity by 2050, and puts forward policy recommendations for governments, industry, financial institutions, and regulators. In terms of operating nuclear units, the report notes that despite the increasing service life of individual units, global nuclear power plants...

Nuclear energy accounts for about 19% of Russia's energy mix
A public report recently released by Rosatom shows that nuclear energy currently accounts for approximately 19% of the Russian Federation's energy mix. The report states that the total low-carbon electricity produced by Rosatom's enterprises has exceeded 220 billion kWh, including nuclear and wind energy. If all power generation enterprises under the group are included in the calculation, including nuclear power plants, thermal power plants, and wind farms, their total electricity generation accounts for about 20% of Russia's national electricity output. The report also mentions that the floating nuclear power plant in Pevek on the Chukotka Peninsula has been in operation for five years, with cumulative electricity generation reaching 1 billion kWh. This facility is currently the only operating floating nuclear power plant in the world....

Russia's Kursk Nuclear Power Plant Releases Annual Environmental Report
Russia's Kursk Nuclear Power Plant recently presented its annual environmental report to local residents in the city of Kurchatov. This year's presentation adopted a cycling event format for the first time, with participants including local residents, city Duma deputies, and relevant personnel, held in the area of Warm Coast Park. The Kursk Nuclear Power Plant is part of Rosenergoatom, the power generation division operator of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom. The plant stated that the event route was specially designed to allow participants to learn about environmental protection data during the ride and directly observe the environmental conditions in the area surrounding the plant. Kursk...

UK report calls for rebuilding nuclear power construction capability on time and on budget
The UK think tank Onward recently released a report stating that if the UK hopes to achieve affordable electricity supply and drive deep decarbonization of its energy system, it must rebuild its capability to deliver nuclear power projects on time and on budget. The report, titled "Solid Foundations: The Case for Cheap, Reliable Power," proposes that the UK should adjust its renewable-dominated power system planning and build a diversified electricity mix comprising nuclear power, renewables, and gas generation, enabling consumers to access affordable electricity when needed. The UK Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) welcomed the report, noting that the issues it raises are of practical relevance. The report recognizes...

Kalinin NPP Reaches 850 Billion kWh of Cumulative Power Generation
On August 4, Russia's Kalinin NPP reported that since the commissioning of its first unit, the plant has generated a cumulative total of 850 billion kWh of low-carbon electricity. This output is equivalent to approximately 3.5 years of electricity demand in Russia's Central Federal District. Kalinin NPP is part of the power division of Rosatom. Viktor Ignatov, the plant's director, stated that the cumulative generation of 850 billion kWh is the result of the long-term dedication and professional commitment of several generations of nuclear workers, built upon the expertise of the operating team, reliable unit performance, and the consistent prioritization of safety...
