2026 maintenance work completed at Russia's Kursk NPP
All 2026 maintenance work at Russia's Kursk NPP has been completed. In the final phase, the plant compressed the maintenance duration by 23.5 days, which is expected to increase electricity generation by approximately 500 million kWh. On August 27, 2026, Unit 4 of Kursk NPP returned to rated power operation after completing scheduled preventive maintenance with modernization upgrades ahead of schedule. The maintenance was completed 20 days ahead of the original plan while ensuring safety and quality. The main maintenance work this cycle was concentrated in the reactor building and turbine hall, including maintenance of multiple forced circulation loop equipment, the reactor emergency cooling system, the blowdown and cooling system, as well as Units 7 and 8...

Russia's Smolensk NPP begins loading improved nuclear fuel
On September 1, 2026, local time, Unit 1 of Russia's Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant began gradually loading improved nuclear fuel. The fuel assemblies feature adjusted uranium-235 enrichment and erbium oxide content, as part of the RBMK-1000 reactor modernization program aimed at enhancing unit operational safety and efficiency. The Smolensk NPP is part of the electric power division of Rosatom and is operated by Rosenergoatom. The fuel assemblies loaded into the core this time use lower uranium-235 enrichment and lower erbium oxide content. According to relevant calculations, the new fuel can compensate for changes in core neutronics parameters following graphite stack repair...

Scheduled Maintenance Launched for Units 3 and 4 of Kursk Nuclear Power Plant
Starting August 11, 2026, Russia's Kursk Nuclear Power Plant launched scheduled routine maintenance on Units 3 and 4. On the same day, the plant also commenced annual maintenance and preventive upkeep of the heat network at the standby boiler house. The operations are scheduled to continue until August 22. Due to the maintenance schedule, hot water supply in the city of Kurchatov has been temporarily interrupted. The Kursk Nuclear Power Plant stated that this is the first time in nearly 50 years of plant operation that local hot water supply has been temporarily suspended due to related maintenance. Hot water supply to Kurchatov will be restored after the maintenance is completed. Alexey Leonov, Deputy Chief Engineer for Operations of the main building at Kursk NPP, said that the plant is currently undergoing significant changes, including the decommissioning of units that have reached their design service life and the commissioning of new units. These changes are transforming the ways thermal energy is produced and delivered to consumers, and also require modernization of the plant and related city infrastructure. He noted that this maintenance cycle is relatively short, and the schedule has been arranged to minimize impact on residents' daily lives. In recent years, the plant has taken measures to avoid scheduling maintenance on Units 3 and 4 during the winter season.

After the maintenance work is completed, the unit will be reconnected to the grid. The shutdown was carried out in accordance with established procedures and design logic. The plant reported no violations of safe operation limits or operating conditions for any of the units. Currently, RBMK-1000 Units 3 and 4 of Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant, as well as Unit 1 of Phase II, are operating normally and carrying electrical loads in accordance with the dispatch schedule. RBMK-1000 Units 1 and 2 are in the preparation stage for decommissioning...
